Phonics
Our 5 Key principles:
The systematic synthetic phonics programme we follow exclusively is Twinkl Phonics. This is a rigorous, engaging and fast-paced programme with a clear focus on segmenting, blending, pure sounds, sound buttons and VAK opportunities with a particular emphasis on applying all of these skills to ensure the children’s learning is embedded.
A resilient approach to reading is nurtured and our pupils are encouraged to be aspirational when building on their reading skills. We set early and secure foundations to strengthen the effectiveness and impact of learning to read across the school.
Our pupils are taught that learning to read develops a healthy mind, broadens horizons and firmly establishes a means to communicate successfully.
Should you want some basic training or have specific questions please email Ardley.hill@ardleyhill.org.uk and ask to speak to Helen Trevor (Reading Lead and Assistant Headteacher)
Below is a video available to those that wish to brush up on their phonics knowledge. We provide many opportunities for parents and carers to be fully involved with their child’s reading journey including phonics workshops, lesson visits, secret reader, reading records and progress letters home.
Supporting with Twinkl we use the Rhino Readers book scheme, which allows children to read books according to their ability, and taught phonemes. We also encourage children to read books chosen by themselves, which may not match their ability but will be enjoyed for pleasure.
