Our Learning – Geography

GEOGRAPHY POLICY

At Ardley Hill Academy, we learn Geography through the creative curriculum. This means that all Key Stages have a topic which they study for a term and through this topic they learn geography, history, art, D&T and some English skills too.

Every class is named after a country (see below) and during the first week, classes learn about and produce work based on their country’s culture.

4+-Wales and Ireland

Year 1-Norway and Portugal.

Year 2-Belgium and Italy.

Year 3-Australia and China.

Year 4-Kenya and Maldives.

Year 5-America and Canada.

Year 6-Brazil and Bolivia

ASD-New Zealand.

During the year, every class prepares and leads a class assembly in which part of their country’s culture is shared amongst other things that the children have been learning about.

What you can do to help.

In order to extend your child’s Geography learning at home, you could:

  • Discuss holidays you’ve been on.
  • Discuss the features of a town as you walk into town.
  • Explore the different set-ups of houses and identify houses as detached, semi-detached and terraced.
  • Research the country that your child’s class is named after or a country where you have friends or family living.
