Kenya – Year 4

Welcome to Year 4 Kenya Class! I am Miss Dearmer and I am the teacher in Kenya class. Mrs Brooke and Ms Lisboa are the other adults that support our learning in Kenya class. We aim to make your time in Year 4 fun, creative, interesting and memorable. Keep checking the website for updates about our current learning!

Summer Topic Learning – Tomb Raiders

Wow the summer term has been really busy in Year 4! Our new topic, Tomb Raiders, is now in full swing. We have decoded hieroglyphic messages, used clay to create our own cartouche and canopic jar artefacts and even embalmed mummies! We used blanket stitches to sew fabric organs, have been drawing on real papyrus paper and worked in teams to create death masks! We used ‘Howard Carter’s Base Camp’ (our new role play area!) to learn about his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and produced some fantastic drama and extended diary writing related to this too. Don’t forget our Fantastic Finish day is on Tuesday 11th July!

Topic Learning – Wonderland Spring Term

Kenya Class absolutely loved our topic Wonderland! Our favourite activities included making poo, (learning about the digestive system!), observing the effects of different drinks on our teeth, creating optical art inspired by Bridget Riley and of course, exploring the text Alice in Wonderland. We created beautiful clay cakes for our class tea party role play area, enjoyed making and eating scones and using electricity to make exciting games! On Monday 3rd April we had our Fantastic Finish Day!

Topic Learning – Roman Britain

We have had such an exciting and busy first term in Year 4! To kick start our topic we were visited by the historical Celtic leader Boudicca at the start of our topic and went on a fantastic, interactive trip to Welwyn Roman Baths and Mill Green Museum! In the second half term we discovered part of our classroom had been used for an archaeological Roman dig! We found lots of artefacts that have helped us with our learning about Roman Britain. Sadly, our topic ended on 9th December with a wonderful ‘Fantastic Finish’ day. Everyone dressed as Romans to take part in our Roman school day, cookery lessons, food tasting banquet and gladiator battles!

Exciting Events

In February Kenya Class visited Dell Farm for a two night residential stay. The children loved being so independent, feeding and grooming the farm animals and looking after each other! Whilst at Dell Farm the children went caving, bouldering, visited Whipsnade Zoo, went on a habitat walk and completed a challenging night orienteering activity in the pitch black! The additional muddy walks and free time to play ‘welly ball’ was enjoyed by all! Lots of lovely memories made!

During Reading Week (27.02.17 – 03.03.17) Kenya Class were visited by the author Josh Lacey. We were lucky enough to have a personal creative writing workshop where we started writing our own stories and had excellent feedback from Josh Lacey about our stories!

This term we have also been taking part in LOTS of exciting events! In September we celebrated Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday with a fantastic Dahlicious Dress Up Day. We performed to our grandparents in the Harvest Festival, wrote incredible poems for the Young Writers National Poetry Day competition and have been enjoying our weekly guitar lessons with Mr Spaulding!
