Kenya – Year 4

Welcome to Kenya Class 2017-2018! I am Miss Dearmer the teacher in Kenya class. The other adults who support our learning are Mrs Brooke and Mrs Fallon. We are all looking forward to an exciting, creative and memorable time in Year 4 with you. Please keep checking our class page for updates and photographs of our learning throughout the academic year.

Home Learning

Your child will have a reading record to fill in each time they read at school independently, with an adult or at home. We encourage children to read everything from poetry, magazines, ‘First News’ newspapers, game instructions etc. It is best to often so we encourage daily reading. The children have a wide range of reading books to choose from in school and they can change their book every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (or during their own break time on other days).
The National Curriculum states, ‘By the end of year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table and show precision and fluency in their work.’ Therefore at Ardley Hill we expect children to be frequently practising all their multiplication tables and associated divisions to reinforce the work we do in school.
Homework is set every half term in the form of a ‘Homework Bingo’ grid tailored to the needs of children in Lower Key Stage Two. Please complete as many of the challenges during term time and ensure you return your book so we can share your hard work with the class and award lots of housepoints and Dojo points!

P.E.

Kenya Class will have two P.E. lessons each week. At least one of these will always be an outdoor session and the day of the week may change due to the weather. Your child must have all their full kits in school every day.

Named black shorts

Outdoor kit

Named black tracksuit bottoms
Named trainers (preferably old as they will become muddy)

You will be informed of swimming lessons in due course.

Spring Term – Wonderland Topic

WONDERLAND TOPIC MAP YEAR 4 2018

Autumn Term

Roman Britain
Our first topic in Year 4 was Roman Britain. We discovered how the Romans changed the landscape by introducing new buildings and architecture; we created our own Lego towns and used junk modelling to explore architecture. We used Roman numerals, learned some Latin words, created our own coins and even made a Roman bag called a bulla using a range of sewing techniques! During our topic we visited Welwyn Roman Baths and Mill Green Museum to learn more about the Roman way of life, experience real life artefacts and participate in Roman food tasting. We finished our topic with a fantastic ‘Roman Day’ where we all dressed up as Roman citizens, took part in a cooking experience and held some of our own Roman gladiator games!
Our Spring term topic is called… Wonderland. Keep your eye on our website and Facebook page for updates.

Other Autumn Events
Also during the Autumn term we learned our very own Harvest poem off by heart and performed it at our Harvest festival for Grandparents. Our poetry recital is also available on the school Harvest CD.
We took part in a whole school Remembrance Day service on 10.11.2017. We created wonderful art work and poppies which were displayed for the community to see on our school fence.
On 1st December all of LKS2 were excited to take part in the Dunstable Torchlight Procession and Light Switch On event. It was great to be part of a huge community event and meet Santa himself!

Additional Information

We will be doing lots of creative and messy learning this year and it would be helpful if your child could bring in a named old t-shirt or shirt that could be worn over their uniform during messy art lessons.

Your child will also need a named water bottle which will be kept in the classroom for them to refill and use daily.

Your child may require a healthy snack for morning break time.
We look forward to starting the year with you!
